On Friday, the Biden administration is likely to reveal the recipients of $7 billion in federal grants for developing regional hydrogen hubs, according to three insiders. This move is in line with President Joe Biden’s plan to make the economy more environmentally friendly by 2050 and aims to pave the way for the production of 50 million metric tons of clean hydrogen fuel in the United States by that year.
The Department of Energy has not provided any specific details about the grant announcement.
The 2021 bipartisan infrastructure bill has set aside as much as $7 billion for the launch of the Regional Clean Hydrogen Hubs program. This initiative will provide funding for the establishment of six to ten regional clean hydrogen hubs throughout the United States.
In 2022, a total of 79 applicants expressed their interest in the hub grants by sending letters to the Energy Department. By January, the DOE had chosen 33 teams to proceed with their proposals.
Furthermore, the administration has allocated additional billions of dollars in subsidies for hydrogen producers through last year’s Inflation Reduction Act.
On Friday, President Biden is planning to visit Philadelphia to talk about his administration’s efforts to create union jobs and promote a future driven by clean energy.
Philadelphia is among the areas competing for a portion of the $7 billion in grants.
